Aww, they are cute! They also creep me out a little. I've had them as pets before... have you seen them when they molt and leave their shells? Scary scorpion-spider-like critters! Not very appetizing to me, although gimme some crab claws anyday. ;)

I've heard about people raising hermit crabs... is it true they'll sometimes cannibalize their cagemates?

As a matter of fact, do people eat hermit crabs? I saw Bootstrap Bill eat on in Dead Man's Chest and thought it looked pretty tasty.

Huh, I don't know about that first bit. That's interesting...

Hmm, I don't know if people regularly eat hermit crabs. I'm sure for survival purposes they are edible though. :) I haven't seen any sold at restaurants yet!

Well, I'm guessing there's really not a lot of meat on them. Plus, being scavengers they're probably toxic.

All crabs are scavengers, aren't they? Most are mighty tasty though. ;)

Well, hermit crabs live closer to the shore, where there's more contamination from animals and humans. Most of the crabs people eat are from the Arctic, where there's not as much pollution. Plus, they have more meat.
